Rejuvenating sun damaged skin can be accomplished by using numerous forms of treatment depending on whether the emphasis is on abnormal coloring, abnormal wrinkling, precancerous rough areas, increased blood vessels and redness or combinations of the above. One or more of the following treatments may be used: Topical creams such as prescriptions for hydroquinone or Renova creams, and products dispensed in the office such as Prevage®, REVALÉSKIN™, M.D. Forté® creams, office treatments such as microdermabrasion, chemical peels of various strengths, liquid nitrogen, laser treatments such as Smoothbeam, intense pulse light facial treatments or laser resurfacing: BOTOX® for diminishing lines around the eyes, the frown area and the forehead; Restylane®/Perlane®/Juvéderm™ for filling in nasolabial fold lines, frown lines, acne scars, indentations and surgical scars.
Laser skin resurfacing, commonly called a laser peel, removes the outer damaged skin to reveal a smoother, younger look. Laser resurfacing can reduce the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, uneven pigmentation and superficial scarring, usually on the face. A carbon dioxide (CO2) laser beam of precisely focused light vaporizes the surface skin and reveals the undamaged layer beneath. Procedure time varies depending on the size and condition of the area being treated.
The Smoothbeam laser is a "non-invasive" laser with minimal recuperation time needed. It stimulates buildup of your own collagen to diminish fines lines. It is also a great treatment for acne and acne scars. It is specifically designed to target the root of acne, the sebaceous gland. It provides the perfect balance of controlled cooling of the epidermis to provide maximum results. It is approved by the FDA for treatment of acne as well as acne scarring.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is commonly used to reduce or eliminate the appearance of facial wrinkles. It is injected under the skin into areas surrounding the eyes, forehead and mouth to smooth crow's feet, frown and worry lines, and lines on the neck. Made from a purified protein, BOTOX® relaxes wrinkles and gives the face a rejuvenated look. BOTOX® may also be useful for migraine headaches, excessive sweating, and eye and neck muscle spasms.
Restylane® and Perlane® are designed to smooth wrinkles, sculpt lips and shape facial contours. They are clear, synthetic gels made with hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that is found throughout your body. They carry little risk of allergic reaction. The most common areas for treatment are the glabellar lines (between the eyebrows) and the nasolabial folds (from the root of the nose to the angle of your mouth). With its unique ability to bind with water, Restylane® and Perlane® remains in your skin for many months.
Vasculight Laser and Intense Pulse Light are used for the treatment of blood vessels of the face, irregular mottling of the skin and the removal of pigmented spots.
Photofacial is a non-abrasive and non-invasive rejuvenation of your skin using the remarkable new technology of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). IPL Photofacials can improve the signs of sun damage, rosacea and brown spots on the face, hands and body. It has also been used to reduce the appearance of mild acne scars, dark circles around the eyes and fine lines around the eyes and mouth.
Chemical peels remove damaged outer layers of skin on the face to smooth texture, reduce scarring, and remove blemishes and pre-cancerous growths to produce healthy, glowing skin. Peel formulas and strengths are tailored to each patient.
Sclerotherapy is the standard treatment for varicose and spider veins. A special sclerosing solution is injected into the diseased vein, which then collapses and is gradually absorbed by the body. By the end of the treatment program, the veins are less visible on the skin surface. Sclerotherapy usually also relieves symptoms associated with enlarged veins and prevents further complications.
Cryotherapy is a process by which brown spots and skin lesions are "frozen" using liquid nitrogen.
- Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion improves mild to moderate sun damage, scarring, wrinkles and other superficial skin problems. A gentle stream of tiny particles exfoliates the outer layer of skin and provides a fresh, glowing, younger appearance. Only a small amount of skin is removed, so sensitive areas such as the face, chest, neck, arms and hands can be treated. Results are comparable to a light chemical peel and should be immediately visible. Microdermabrasion is often performed in conjunction with other skin renewal procedures, such as laser treatment and chemical peels. Multiple treatments are recommended for full effect.
